Ottawa's Highest Quality Organic Lawn Care

Thank you for your interest in safe lawn care.  With an increase in awareness and education, regarding the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, more and more homeowners are turning to safe lawn care as a healthy choice for their family, pets, and the environment. Every year thousands of tons of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are applied to properties for cosmetic reasons.  Measurable amounts are finding their way into our streams, rivers and lakes.  Use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides damage your soil.  With each application your lawn becomes more and more susceptible to future problems, requiring further chemical applications to treat them.  This cycle of chemical dependence becomes difficult to break.

Caring for your property the natural way is easy.  Through the use of high quality organic fertilizers, we can re-establish, and feed the beneficial microorganisms, such as grub killing nematodes, which should be present in healthy soil.  Healthy soil provides powerful checks and balances that make the natural lawn more resistant to weeds, insects, and drought conditions.  Safe lawn care is the only truly long-term, sustainable lawn care available.  Our proven system of proper horticultural practices including, aeration, seeding, and high quality organic nutrients and amendments are designed to reset your lawns’ natural balance and maintain a healthy lawn while eliminating or greatly reducing pesticide applications.

Did you know, the majority of organic lawn care companies use fertilizers that contain processed human sewage, animal by-products, manures, and/or up to 85% synthetic fertilizer?  These products may fall into the classification of ‘organic’, or ‘organic based’, however, we do not feel they are acceptable for use in any of our programs.

At Natural Choice, we only use the highest quality organic products.  Our fertilizers are quite simply the cleanest, highest quality natural fertilizers available.  All our products are plant derived from only the highest quality natural sources.  So which organic package is right for you?  The question should be, “How much do you want to do for your lawn this season?”

The Natural Choice is a good ‘starter’ organic package.  Included in this package is the minimum recommended 2 applications of our high quality, 100% organic granular fertilizer to sweeten and condition the soil.  Spring and Fall nematode applications to control and prevent white grub infestations, as well as the basic cultural practices such as aeration and annual over seeding that are so important to maintaining a healthy natural lawn.

The Totally Organic Experience is our recommended package.  Included in this package is a total of four applications of our high quality, 100% organic granular fertilizer to sweeten and condition the soil.  These applications are completed early Spring, late Spring, Summer, and Fall.  Spring and Fall nematode applications to control and prevent white grub infestations, as well as the basic cultural practices such as aeration and annual over seeding that are so important to maintaining a healthy natural lawn.
In addition to the services that we offer in our lawn care programs, there are other cultural practices that must be considered in order for your natural lawn care project to be a success.  Chemical lawn care provides the ‘appearance’ of a healthy lawn, all the while depleting the soil and creating a very un-sustainable property when the chemicals are taken away.  They basically allow you to neglect the lawn, while still keeping the ‘appearance’ of a healthy property.  In the natural lawn care system, all of our cultural practices are equally important to overall success.

First and foremost, we must follow proper irrigation practices.  Planning to water all areas of the lawn for a minimum of 1 hour per week can be a guideline for those who cannot monitor the lawn to determine when the lawn needs water and in which areas.  In general, the goal should be to provide enough water to keep the lawn green and growing.  In the early spring most lawns do not need more water than Mother Nature provides.  However, beginning June 1st, you should be prepared to water areas as required to keep those areas green and growing.  An area that is allowed to dry out in early June is an invitation to chinch bugs to set up a colony here!  Also when we allow the lawn to dry out and go dormant, the lawn becomes more susceptible to invading weeds.  A thick green lawn resists weed and insect invasions.  Watering should be done heavily and infrequently, (Ie: 1 time weekly for 2 hrs) rather than watering daily for 20 minutes.  This practice will promote deep root growth, as the roots will go deeper to find water as the soil dries out from the surface down.

Another overlooked practice that affects the overall health of the lawn is proper cutting.  Your lawn should be cut at least 1 time per week with a sharp blade to a height not less than 2 inches.  Our average cutting heights range from 2.75 inches to 3.25 inches.  When the lawn is cut too short we put the grass under stress, again, making it susceptible to weed and insect invasions.  A lawn that is left longer will have more leaf surface to photosynthesize sunlight resulting in a stronger, healthier turf.  Weed seeds cannot germinate because the longer, thicker grass is preventing sunlight from reaching the weed seeds.

Often, one or more aspects of your cultural practices are lacking.  This season, if you don’t feel that you have the time to invest in caring for your property the natural way, let us help.  We are available for all of your maintenance needs.  We can provide professional spring clean up services, weekly lawn cutting and monitoring of your property, fall clean up and disposal services, slit seeding, top dressing and seeding, or sod for weak or damaged areas.  We provide complete tree, shrub and cedar hedge trimming and removal services as well as installations of low maintenance and naturalized landscapes.
